Frequently asked questions

How do I find out how much my final is worth?+

Check the grading breakdown on your syllabus; it lists each category with a percentage, like "Final exam: 25%". If the final sits inside an "Exams" category, divide that category weight by the number of exams. When in doubt, ask your professor; the weight changes your required score a lot.

What if my current grade already includes some of the final category?+

Enter your grade on everything except the final. Most gradebooks (Canvas, Blackboard) show a running grade that excludes unsubmitted work; that number is what this calculator expects as your current grade.

The calculator says I need more than 100%. Is my target impossible?+

On the final alone, yes. But check for remaining assignments, extra credit, or dropped-lowest-score policies that could raise your pre-final grade first, and use the table to see which grade is realistically reachable so you can study toward that.

It says my grade is locked in. Should I still study?+

Locked in means even a zero keeps your target, which is rare and worth double-checking against your syllabus. Most schools also record the higher grade if you outperform, and finals in sequenced courses cover material the next course assumes you know.

Are the letter-grade cutoffs the same at every school?+

No. This tool uses the common 93/90/87 scale, but plenty of schools cut A at 94 or B at 84, and some do not award A+ at all. Your syllabus is the authority; use the custom target field to match its exact cutoff.
