What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?+
Unweighted GPA caps every class at 4.0 no matter its difficulty. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder courses, most commonly +1.0 for AP or IB and +0.5 for honors, so an A in an AP class counts 5.0. The same grades produce a higher weighted number.
Is a 4.2 weighted GPA good?+
It means you are earning strong grades in a schedule with honors or AP weight, since 4.0 is the unweighted ceiling. Context matters: selective colleges look at your grades within the rigor available at your school rather than the raw number, because weighting policies differ everywhere.
Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?+
Many recalculate your GPA their own way from your transcript, often unweighted in academic courses only, and then judge course rigor separately. Report whichever number your application asks for, and expect admissions to look at both.
Why does my school’s weighted GPA not match this calculator?+
Weighting is not standardized. Some districts add +0.5 for AP instead of +1.0, some weight on a 4.5 or 6.0 ceiling, and some only weight semester grades. This tool uses the most common convention (+0.5 honors, +1.0 AP/IB); your school profile document defines the official one.
Does a failing grade still get the AP bonus?+
No. In this calculator, and at schools generally, an F earns zero grade points regardless of course level. The bonus rewards succeeding in harder courses, not enrolling in them.
