Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?+
Semester (or term) GPA covers only the courses you took this term. Cumulative GPA averages every graded course you have taken, weighted by credits. A strong semester raises your cumulative less and less as you accumulate credits, which is why early semesters matter so much.
How do I calculate my semester GPA by hand?+
Multiply each course’s grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on) by its credit hours, add those products up, then divide by the total credit hours you attempted this term. This calculator does exactly that as you type.
Does my semester GPA show up on my transcript?+
Most transcripts show both: a term GPA printed under each semester and a running cumulative GPA. Employers and grad schools usually look at cumulative, but scholarship renewals and dean’s list decisions are often based on the term number.
What semester GPA puts me on academic probation?+
Commonly a cumulative GPA below 2.0 triggers probation, and some schools also act on a single term below 2.0 regardless of cumulative standing. The exact thresholds are in your school’s academic standing policy.
Should withdrawals or incompletes go into the calculator?+
No. A W earns no grade points and no attempted credits toward GPA at most schools, and an incomplete has no grade yet. Add the course only once it has a letter grade.
