How is college GPA different from high school GPA?+
College GPA is credit-weighted and almost always unweighted on the 4.0 scale: there are no honors or AP bonuses, and a 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 1-credit lab. High school GPAs are often weighted to 5.0, which is why they can look higher.
Do pass/fail courses count toward my college GPA?+
Usually not. At most schools a Pass earns credit toward graduation but no grade points, so it does not change your GPA; a Fail often does count as an F. Leave pass/fail courses out of the calculator unless your school includes them.
What happens to my GPA when I retake a course?+
It depends on your school’s repeat policy. Some replace the old grade entirely, some average both attempts, and some show both on the transcript but count only the newer one. Check the registrar’s policy before assuming a retake erases an F.
What GPA do I need for the dean’s list or honors?+
Dean’s list commonly requires a 3.5 or higher term GPA with a minimum credit load, and Latin honors at graduation often start around 3.5 cumulative (cum laude), but the cutoffs are set by each school. Your catalog has the exact numbers.
Do transfer credits affect my GPA at the new school?+
At most schools, no: transfer courses come in as credit only and your GPA starts fresh. Some systems (and many graduate or medical school applications) do recalculate with every grade you have ever earned, so both numbers can matter.
