The Most In-Demand College Majors, Ranked by Projected Job Openings (2026)

Abstract

This brief ranks 60 undergraduate majors by the projected number of annual job openings in the occupations each major commonly leads to. Openings are drawn from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (projections 2022 to 2032)^[1], and occupations are mapped to majors using O*NET occupational data^[2] and PlanexAI’s curated catalog. Business Administration ranks first, with approximately 1,669,300 projected annual openings across 37 occupations, followed by Finance (898,700) and Health Sciences (639,500). Because an occupation can be reached from more than one major, the totals represent opportunity counts per major rather than a partition of the labor market.

Data and methods

For each major, we sum the projected average annual U.S. job openings of the occupations it commonly leads to, from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (projections 2022 to 2032)^[1]. Occupation-to-major mappings use O*NET occupational data^[2] and PlanexAI’s curated catalog; a major is counted as leading to an occupation when that path is common, not merely possible. The Handbook draws its wage estimates from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey^[3] and its openings projections from the BLS Employment Projections program^[4]. Because a single occupation can be reached from several majors, its openings are counted under each of those majors; the per-major totals therefore measure the size of the opportunity a major opens, not a division of total employment.

Limitations

• Openings are national ten-year projections, not guarantees, and revise as the BLS updates its models^[1].
• The occupation-to-major mapping reflects common paths, not every possible one, and involves editorial judgment.
• Occupations reachable from several majors are counted under each, so totals should be read as opportunity size per major, not shares of the labor market.
• Figures are national; local demand and pay vary by state and metro area.
